What is the best type of hearing aid?

Before you purchase a hearing aid, you're most likely going to research various brands and models. We encourage our patients to bring their questions and concerns to us. We can help guide you in the right direction by providing a variety of options to fit your hearing loss needs and your budget.

Types of Hearing Aids

We've put together a guide to help you understand the various types of hearing aid available today.

COMPLETELY-IN-CANAL (CIC)

Completely-In-Canal hearing aids are the most discreet models of hearing aids available. Unless someone is peeking in your ear canal, chances are they won't even notice you're wearing a hearing aid. Many people with mild to moderate hearing loss prefer CICs for their comfort and their appearance, or lack thereof.

INVISIBLE-IN-CANAL (IIC)

Invisible-In-Canal hearing aids are completely invisible to others, since they fit discreetly in the contours of the ear. IICs are both comfortable and discreet, but they only tend to work for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. Those with significant hearing loss will most likely need a model that includes an external amplifier to increase hearing ability and quality.

RECEIVER-IN-CANAL (RIC)

Receiver-In-Canal hearing aids are also fairly discreet, although not always completely invisible. They are also fairly comfortable and are available in a wide variety of colors to complement various skin tones and hair colors. RICs are a great option for anyone with more severe hearing loss looking for a discreet hearing aid.

IN-THE-EAR (ITE)

In-The-Ear hearing aids are much more powerful than smaller, more discreet models, so those with severe hearing loss can notice a significant improvement with this type of hearing aid.

BEHIND-THE-EAR (BTE)

Behind-The-Ear hearing aids are ideal for those with significant amounts of hearing loss. They are the most powerful type of hearing aid on the market. Many models also include long-lasting battery power, or even charging stations. These models also tend to have more features than smaller hearing aids that must trade off features and external controls for less space.

What are the benefits of small hearing aids?
